إن عيني لم تأل في الدمع جهدا
Where can I find a tear to quench my longing?
Where can I find tears to extinguish my passion?
Indeed, my eye has spared no effort in weeping.
My eyes never weary of shedding their tears.

Enough for it if it has wept blood and tears,
Although they have wept blood and tears,
with both making eyelids and a cheek sore.
With which they have ulcerated my eyelids and cheeks.

It mingled this with that, just as long-
I have mingled my tears with my pains,
ing mingled sickness and sleeplessness with yearning’s heat.
Like the pouring of rain on a sickly invalid.

واصبري للذي جنيب فبعدا
O eye, this comes of what you saw, so taste it;
These tears are because of what I have seen, so taste them,
and endure what you have brought upon yourself [conjectural reading]; away with you!
And have patience, O my heart, though far off.
