أينَwhere ليfor me مثلُthe like of قلبهِhis heart فأصدso I turn away
كيفَhow أسلوI cease to love وليسand there is no ليfor me منهfrom him بُدُّescape
Where can I find a heart like his, so I can turn away?
Where can I find a heart like his to confide in?
How can I forget him when I cannot do without him?
How can I be consoled when I cannot do without him?
كانَwas وجديmy anguish عليهِover him وهوand it شديدٌintense
واشتياقيand my longing إليهِfor him منهُthan it أشدُّmore intense
My anguish over him was intense,
My passion for him was intense, and so was his severity,
And my longing for him was more intense still.
Yet my yearning for him was even more intense.
ظنَّhe thought ماwhat بيails me هزلاًa jest فأمسكَso he held back عنيfrom me
والذيyet that which بيails me منthan كلِّall جدٍّearnestness أجدُّmore earnest
He thought what ailed me a jest, and so held back from me,
He thought my passion was merely jesting, so he shunned me,
Yet what I feel is more earnest than all earnestness.
Though what I felt for him was all too serious and sincere.
فنيتwere exhausted عبرتيmy tears عليهِfor him حنيناًin longing
فبخدِّيso on my cheek منfrom دمعِthe tears of عينيmy eye خدُّa furrow
My tears were spent in longing for him,
I pined for him until I was consumed with grief -
So my eye’s tears have left a furrow in my cheek.
My cheeks still bear the stain of my tears' blood.
