أيُّwhat سهمٍarrow فيin قلبٍa heart أيِّwhat قتيلِslain man
بِجفونٍby eyelids وسنىdrowsy وَطرفٍand a gaze كَحيلِkohl-dark
What arrow lies in the heart of what slain man—
What arrow lies in what slain man's heart,
shot by a languid glance and a kohl-darkened eye?
shot by drowsy eyelids and a kohl-dark gaze?
حَسبُenough for منwhoever كانَwas شامتاًgloating إنif رآنيhe saw me
ملنيhas tired of me كلُّevery ناصحٍwell-wisher وخليلِand close friend
Enough for whoever gloats, should he see me:
It is enough for anyone who gloats, should he see me,
every sincere adviser and close friend has grown weary of me.
that every well-wisher and close friend has tired of me.
لاdo not تلومواblame (plural) علىfor البكاءweeping مُحباًa lover
إنindeed فيin الدمعِtears راحةًrelief للعليلِfor the ailing
Do not reproach a lover for weeping;
Do not blame a lover for weeping;
for in tears there is comfort for one who ails.
indeed, in tears there is relief for the ailing.
ماءَO water عينيَّof my two eyes أطفِquench ماwhat فيin فؤاديmy heart

هلis there? إلىto ردِّholding back زفرةٍa sigh منany (emphatic) سبيلِway
The water of my eyes has extinguished what was in my heart—
O water of my eyes, quench what is in my heart.
is there any way to suppress a sigh?
Is there any way to hold back a sigh?
