كُنَّاwe were جَميعاًall together فَتفرَّقناthen we parted
كُنَّا جَميعاً فَتفرَّقنا
ياO بينُseparation لمwhy أوحشتَناhave you made us lonely مِنَّاfrom us
يا بينُ لم أوحشتَنا مِنَّا
We were together, then we parted.
We were all together, then we parted
O separation, why have you left us bereft of one another?
O time, why did you make us lonely without us
ماwhat كانَwould have ضرharmed الدَّهرُTime لوif سَرَّناgladdened us
ما كانَ ضر الدَّهرُ لو سَرَّنا
بِغَفلةٍwith heedlessness منon the part of صَرفهِits vicissitudes عَنَّاof us
بِغَفلةٍ من صَرفهِ عَنَّا
What harm would it have done Time had it gladdened us,
The days would not have been bad, had we kept going
with its vicissitudes heedless of us?
Oblivious to its changes upon us
آذاكَhurt you منfrom كُثرٍabundance بناamong us قلةٌscarcity
آذاكَ من كُثرٍ بنا قلةٌ
ومِنand from سُرورٍjoy دائمٍlasting حُزناsorrow
ومِن سُرورٍ دائمٍ حُزنا
Our scarcity after abundance has hurt you,
Do many of us irk you, or few?
and sorrow after lasting joy.
And instead of lasting joy, sorrow
فردَّناso may He return us اللَهGod إلىto غايةٍa point
فردَّنا اللَه إلى غايةٍ
كناwe were بهاat it حينَwhen تواصَلناwe were united
كنا بها حينَ تواصَلنا
So may God return us to the point
May God return us to a time
where we were when we were united.
