هذاthis فعالُthe work of الفِراقِparting فاستبنِso discern clearly
هذا فعالُ الفِراقِ فاستبنِ
واشكُand complain إلىto اللَهِGod حادثَthe calamity of الزمنِtime
واشكُ إلى اللَهِ حادثَ الزمنِ
This is the work of parting, so discern it clearly.
This is indeed the act of separation, so take heed
And complain to God of time's calamity.
And complain to God about the vicissitudes of time
ياO فرقةًseparation زادتِincreased الفوائدَthe benefits (as written) ضنىًwasting sickness
يا فرقةً زادتِ الفوائدَ ضنىً
ووكلتهُand consigned it بالشوقِto longing والحَزَنِand grief
ووكلتهُ بالشوقِ والحَزَنِ
O separation, that added wasting sickness to the benefits,
O separation! You have increased intimacy with deprivation
and consigned it to longing and grief.
And entrusted it with yearning and sorrow
ياO مرbitter بينِparting from الحبيبِthe beloved مُكتَئِباًdespondent
يا مر بينِ الحبيبِ مُكتَئِباً
وَلمand did not يَزلcease to be آفةًa blight علىupon البَدَنِthe body
وَلم يَزل آفةً على البَدَنِ
O bitter parting from the beloved, so despondent,
O you who pass by the beloved in melancholy
and never ceasing to be a blight upon the body.
And ceaselessly remain a blight upon the body
ياO قلبُheart ماذاwhat لقيتُI suffered منكَfrom you فياso, oh
يا قلبُ ماذا لقيتُ منكَ فيا
ليتكَwould that you قبلَbefore الفِراقِthe parting لمdid not تكنِexist
ليتكَ قبلَ الفِراقِ لم تكنِ
O heart, what have I suffered from you! Oh,
O heart! What have I experienced from you! Woe is me
would that you had not existed before the parting.
If only you did not exist before the separation
