يا خلي من الدنفِ
They close upon sorrow,
It contains regret,
O you free from lovesickness.
Oh, leave off pouting,

قال للجفونِ أطع
تِyou (feminine ending completing أطعتِ) الهوىpassion ولمand did not تكفِdesist
تِ الهوى ولم تكفِ
He said to the eyelids: “You obeyed
He said to the eyelids, obey
passion and did not desist.
Passion’s call and cease your resistance,
قدindeed جنيتyou have brought on داهيةًa calamity
قد جنيت داهيةً
فاصبريso endure أوor اعترفيconfess
فاصبري أو اعترفي
You have indeed brought on a calamity;
Much harm have you gathered,
so endure, or confess.
So be patient or make a confession,
كمhow often بذلتyou offered up ذاone with سقمٍillness
كم بذلت ذا سقمٍ
للعيونِto the eyes والهَيَفِand slenderness of waist
للعيونِ والهَيَفِ
How often you have offered up a sufferer
How much have you given in sickness
to eyes and slender waists!”
