أصبحَhas come to be القلبُthe heart عندهُwith him
أصبحَ القلبُ عندهُ
وهوand he لوif شاءhe wished ردهhe would return it
وهو لو شاء رده
The heart is now in his keeping;
My heart has come to stay with him
and he, if he wished, would return it.
Though if he wished, he'd send it away
كيفhow للمقلتينfor the two eyes أنto
كيف للمقلتين أن
يطعماthey both taste النومsleep بعدهafter him
يطعما النوم بعده
How can the two eyes
How can my eyes sleep after that
taste sleep after him?
When to him my soul does stray
كمhow often تمنيتI wished for منهfrom him وصunion (word continues)
كم تمنيت منه وص
لاًcompletion of 'union' فأعطيتyet I was given صدهhis rejection
لاً فأعطيت صده
How often I wished for union with him,
I wished for union with my dear
yet was given his rejection.
But his rejection came my way
لامنيreproached me فيهconcerning him حاسدٌan envious man
لامني فيه حاسدٌ
أتعبَmay exhaust اللهGod جدهhis efforts
أتعبَ الله جده
An envious man reproached me on his account;
Let no envious blamer rebuke
may God exhaust his efforts!
May God make his enemies pay
