القلبthe heart يحسدُenvies عينيmy eye لذةَpleasure النظرof gazing
والعينُand the eye تحسدُenvies قلبيmy heart لذةَpleasure الفكرِof thought
The heart envies my eye the pleasure of gazing.
The heart envies my eyes the pleasure of sight
And the eye envies my heart the pleasure of thought.
And the eye envies my heart the pleasure of thought

كمhow much تنظرينyou gaze رماكmay He afflict you اللهGod بالسهرِwith sleeplessness
My heart says to my eye whenever it gazes:
My heart says to my eye whenever it looks
How much you gaze! May God afflict you with sleeplessness!
How much you look, may God afflict you with wakefulness

والقلبand the heart بالدمعwith tears ينهاهاforbids it عنfrom النظرgazing
The eye bequeaths it sorrow and so preoccupies it.
The eye bequeaths anxiety to it, distracting it
And the heart, with tears, forbids it to gaze.
And the heart with tears deters it from looking
هذانthese two خصمانtwo adversaries لاnot أرضىI am content بحكمهماwith their judgment
فاحكمso judge فديتكmay I be your ransom بينbetween القلبthe heart والبصرand sight
These two are adversaries; I am not content with their judgment.
These two are adversaries, I am not pleased with their judgment
So judge—may I be your ransom—between the heart and sight.
So judge, my soul, between the heart and sight
