قرتhave found comfort بقلبيin my heart أعينthe eyes الكمدof grief
وبناظريand in my eyes نواظرُthe eyes السهدof sleeplessness
The eyes of grief have found comfort in my heart,
And in my eyes, the eyes of sleeplessness.
وابتعتand I bought بالصبرwith patience الجميلbeautiful أسىًa sorrow
أفنىI waste away ولاyet does not يفنيdestroy [me] يداًhand بيدto hand
And with beautiful patience I bought a sorrow:
I waste away, yet it does not destroy me—an exchange from hand to hand.
ولبستand I donned ماthat which أبلىI grow worn بجدتهin its newness
ويحولand it intervenes بينbetween الروحthe soul والجسدand the body
And I have donned that in whose newness I grow worn,
And which comes between the soul and the body.

It comes to you to complain of wasting sickness—
My heart’s lament, addressed to no one else.
