نامَfell asleep الخليُّthe carefree one وليلُand the night of طَرفِيmy eye ساهرُwakeful
ياO مُقلَتيmy eye أماis there not لليليto my night آخِرُan end
The carefree one has fallen asleep, while my eye’s night keeps vigil.
The night has lingered, my eyes are sleepless still,
O my eye, is there no end to my night?
Oh when will come the final hour of night?
ياO مَنyou who نأىdeparted فنأىso departed العزاءُsolace لفقدهِbecause of losing him
إنif غِبتَyou are absent عَنfrom عَينيmy eye فذكركَthen the memory of you حاضِرُpresent
O you who departed, at whose loss solace too departed,
You who have gone and gone is all my joy,
If you are absent from my sight, the memory of you is present.
Though gone from sight, you're present in my thoughts.
مِنfrom أينwhere ليfor me شمسٌa sun أعيشُI live بنورِهاby its light
فيamong الناسpeople أوor قمرٌa moon منيرٌluminous زاهِرُradiant
Where can I find a sun by whose light I may live,
Whence comes a sun whose light sustains my life?
Among people, or a luminous, radiant moon?
A shining moon amidst the teeming throng?
مِنfrom أينَwhere فيin الأرضِthe earth الأريضةِspacious روضةٌa garden
إنif لمnot يكنhe is أوor غصنُa branch of بانٍa bān tree ناضِرُflourishing
Where on the spacious earth is there a garden,
Whence comes a garden in this dusty world?
If he is not there—or a flourishing branch of the bān tree?
If not your branch, no blossoms can there be.
