دلَّ على أنّي به مدنفُ

دلَّ على أنّي به مدنفُ

عينٌ من الوجدِ به تذرفُ

عينٌ من الوجدِ به تذرفُ

That I am lovesick for him is revealed

My tearful eyes reveal that I'm lovesick,

by an eye shedding tears for him out of longing.

Weeping with passion that cannot be hid.

وإنما يهجرني إنهُ

وإنما يهجرني إنهُ

يعرفُ من قلبي ما يعرفُ

يعرفُ من قلبي ما يعرفُ

And he shuns me only because he

He shuns me only knowing that my heart

knows what he knows of my heart.

Harbors the love that he's already chid.

ما طرفت عيني بأجفانها

ما طرفت عيني بأجفانها

يوماً على الأرض ولا يطرفُ

يوماً على الأرض ولا يطرفُ

Never has my eye, with its lids, beheld,

Never have my eyelids blinked down

on any day on earth—nor does it behold—

To earth since he looked away amid.

أعزّ ممن أنا عبدٌ له

أعزّ ممن أنا عبدٌ له

عليَّ في الناس ولا يُنصفُ

عليَّ في الناس ولا يُنصفُ

one dearer than he whose slave I am,

More precious than I am his servant,

to me among men—yet he is unjust.

Though with people he's not just or fair.
