دمعٌtears سيبذلهُhe will shed them وكانَand he used to يصونُهُguard them
دنِفٌa lovesick man أصيبَhe was stricken فأسعدتهُso they aided him جفونُهُhis eyelids
Tears he will shed, though once he guarded them—
Tears he would shed though he'd protect them,
a lovesick man, stricken, whose eyelids came to his aid.
A wounded heart though eyelids healed him,
لمdid not يبكِweep حتَّىuntil غرَّهُdeceived him بفراقهِby his departure
إلفٌa beloved وطالَand lasted long بكاؤُهُhis weeping وحنينُهُand his yearning
He did not weep until, by departing, he was deceived
He did not weep until parting fooled him,
by a beloved; his weeping and yearning lasted long.
A friend of old, prolonged his crying, his yearning,
ألِفَhe grew used to السهادَsleeplessness وهَلand does ينامُsleep متيمٌone enslaved by love
ماnot إنemphasizes the negation ينامُsleep زفيرُهُhis sighing وأنينُهُand his moaning
He grew used to sleeplessness—and does one enslaved by love sleep?
He's used to wakefulness. Can an enamored one sleep?
His sighing and his moaning do not sleep at all.
His sighs and moans won't let him sleep.
ياO مَنyou who يلومُreproaches أفِقcome to your senses ودَعنيand leave me والهَوىand love
أيُطيعنيwill it obey me? قلبيmy heart وهَذاand this دينُهُits creed
O you who reproach me, come to your senses; leave me and love alone.
O you who blame me, leave me be! This passion
Will my heart obey me, when this is its creed?
Won't obey my heart though it's his religion.
