سعدتshe rejoiced بالدمعwith tears حتىuntil هجعتshe fell asleep
لربهاfor her master ماwhat بيails me إذاًthen لامتنعتshe would surely have refrained
She rejoiced in tears until she fell asleep.
I found joy in tears until I fell asleep,
Her master has what ails me—then she would have held back. [The Arabic wording is unclear.]
So my Lord cannot blame me if I did not refuse.
بذلتshe gave عينيmy eye فؤاديmy heart للهوىto love
ويحهاalas for her لمdid not تدرknow ماذاwhat صنعتshe did
My eye gave my heart over to love.
I gave my eyes and heart to passion,
Alas for her! She did not know what she had done.
Woe to me! They did not know what they did.
فبكتso she wept منbecause of فقدهits loss واعترفتand she admitted
أنهاthat she كانتhad been عليهover it جزعتshe grieved
So she wept at its loss and admitted
So they wept for losing him and admitted
that she had grieved over it.
That they had grieved for him.
ذهبتshe took away منيfrom me بماthat with which سهدتهاI kept her awake
كيفhow ضرتنيshe harmed me وغيريand someone other than me نفعتshe benefited
She took from me that with which I kept her awake.
They took from me what made them wakeful.
How she harmed me and benefited someone else!
How did they hurt me and benefit others?
