هجمَassailed الفراقُseparation علىupon محبٍّa lover عاقلِsensible
هجمَ الفراقُ على محبٍّ عاقلِ
فرمَىthen struck مقاتلَهُhis vitals بسهمٍwith an arrow قاتلِdeadly
فرمَى مقاتلَهُ بسهمٍ قاتلِ
Separation assailed a sensible lover,
Separation attacked a rational lover,
Then struck his vitals with a deadly arrow.
So its fighter struck him with a fatal arrow.
وشَفىand gratified العذولَthe reproacher وحاسديهِand his enviers بالذيthrough the one who
وشَفى العذولَ وحاسديهِ بالذي
ماnot زالَturned away منهُfrom him بحاسدٍbecause of an envier أوor عاذلِa reproacher
ما زالَ منهُ بحاسدٍ أو عاذلِ
And gratified the reproacher and his enviers at the expense of one
And healed the blamer and his envious ones with what
Who never turned from him because of an envier or reproacher.
Remained from him no envious or blaming person.
حلَّmay it befall الفراقُseparation بمنupon whoever يلومُreproaches علىfor الهَوىpassionate love
حلَّ الفراقُ بمن يلومُ على الهَوى
لومَreproaching الكئيبِthe sorrowful one المستهامِthe love-stricken one الناحِلِthe wasted one
لومَ الكئيبِ المستهامِ الناحِلِ
May separation befall whoever reproaches for love,
Separation befell the one who blames love,
Reproaching the sorrowful, love-stricken, wasted one.
The blame of the gloomy, distracted mourner.
نزلَdescended الفِراقُseparation بهِupon him ففارقَso he parted from روحَهُhis soul
نزلَ الفِراقُ بهِ ففارقَ روحَهُ
وأجابَand answered زفرتَهُhis sigh بدمعٍwith tears هاملِstreaming
وأجابَ زفرتَهُ بدمعٍ هاملِ
Separation descended upon him, so he parted from his soul,
Separation descended upon him, so his soul parted,
And answered his sigh with streaming tears.
And his sigh answered with a pouring tear.
