وجانسَهُ الوَردُ والجُلنارُ
Redness took hold of his cheek,
Redness adorned his cheeks,
and roses and pomegranate blossoms matched it.
And roses and eglantine graced him,
وأشرقَand it shone حتىso much that كأنَّas though الضياthe light (word continues)
وأشرقَ حتى كأنَّ الضيا
ءَcompletion of 'light' منfrom نورِthe radiance of بهجتهِhis beauty مستعارborrowed
ءَ من نورِ بهجتهِ مستعار
And it shone so brightly that light seemed
He shone so brightly it was as if
borrowed from the radiance of his beauty.
His radiant joy lent light to the day.
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle بداappeared وجهُهُhis face فيin الظلاthe darkness (word continues)
إذا ما بدا وجهُهُ في الظلا
مِcompletion of 'darkness' عادreturned بهِwith it للعيونِto the eyes النهارُday
مِ عاد بهِ للعيونِ النهارُ
Whenever his face appeared in the darkness,
When his face appeared from the shadows,
day returned to the eyes with it.
Day itself returned to gladden our eyes.
كأنَّas though النعيمَbliss مدركاتٌperceptible things
كأنَّ النعيمَ مدركاتٌ
فإلفٌthus, a beloved وخلٌّand a close friend وخدنٌand an intimate companion وجارُand a neighbor
فإلفٌ وخلٌّ وخدنٌ وجارُ
As though bliss were tangible:
It was as if Paradise were attainable goals -
a beloved, a close friend, an intimate companion, and a neighbor.
Familiarity, sweetness, coquetry, and a companion.
