لم يدَعهُ الكبر حتَّى هَجرا

لم يدَعهُ الكبر حتَّى هَجرا

لو بهِ ما بي إذاً ما صبرا

Pride would not leave him alone until he forsook me.

Pride did not let him go until he left

Had he felt what I feel, he would not have endured.

If he had what I have then he would not have been so patient

وقفَ القلبُ على نفرتهِ

وقفَ القلبُ على نفرتهِ

وعلى الطرفِ البكا والسهرا

وعلى الطرفِ البكا والسهرا

The heart stood still at his aversion,

My heart stood still because of his aversion

and upon the eye fell weeping and sleeplessness.

While my eyes cried and lost sleep

هل أطاعَ القلبُ من يعذلُهُ

هل أطاعَ القلبُ من يعذلُهُ

في هواهُ أو عصى ما أمرا

في هواهُ أو عصى ما أمرا

Did the heart obey the one who reproached it

Did my heart obey the one who blamed it

for its passion, or defy what he commanded?

For its love or disobey what was ordered

لا أبتلي اللَه بما لي من هوىً

لا أبتلي اللَه بما لي من هوىً

من لمن لم يرث لي أو صبرا

من لمن لم يرث لي أو صبرا

I do not put God to the test with the passion I bear.

I will not test God with the love I have

Who is there for one who neither pitied me nor showed patience?

For one who did not inherit it for me or have patience
