ياO عزيزrare المثلِthe equal فيamong البشرِhumankind
يا عزيز المثلِ في البشرِ
جلَّhe is exalted عنbeyond ندٍّa rival وعنand beyond قدرِmeasure
جلَّ عن ندٍّ وعن قدرِ
O you whose equal is rare among humankind,
O peerless paragon among men
exalted beyond any rival and beyond measure.
Exalted above rival and peer
أكبرتهُit held him in awe العينُthe eye فانصرفتso it turned away
أكبرتهُ العينُ فانصرفت
وهيwhile it بينَbetween الدمعِtears والسهَرِand sleeplessness
وهي بينَ الدمعِ والسهَرِ
The eye held him in awe, then turned away,
The eye enlarged him, then was diverted
caught between tears and sleeplessness.
Between tears and sleepless vigil
طرفُهاits gaze حيرانُbewildered ليسdoes not يَرىsee
طرفُها حيرانُ ليس يَرى
صورةًa form تحكيهِresembles him فيamong الصورِthe forms
صورةً تحكيهِ في الصورِ
Its gaze is bewildered, seeing no
Its glance confused, it can no longer see
form among forms that resembles him.
An image that depicts him in images
ماwhat لطرفٍwith an eye كانused to يلحظُهُgaze upon him
ما لطرفٍ كان يلحظُهُ
كيفَhow لاnot يثنىit is turned away عنfrom القمرِthe moon
كيفَ لا يثنى عن القمرِ
What ails an eye that once gazed upon him—
What glance has ever beheld
how could it not be turned away from the moon?
That would not turn away from the moon?
شمسُa sun حسنٍbeauty صحنُthe expanse وجنتهِof his cheek
شمسُ حسنٍ صحنُ وجنتهِ
تدهشُit dazzles الأبصارthe eyes للنظرِat the sight
تدهشُ الأبصار للنظرِ
The expanse of his cheek is a sun of beauty,
The sun of beauty, his face's garden
dazzling the eyes when beheld.
