ياO مَنyou who يَصدُّturns away تركتَyou left قلبيmy heart مُدنفاًwasting away with love
جزِعاًanguished وغايةُand the utmost مثلهِone like it أنto يكلَفاbe consumed by love
O you who turn away, you have left my heart wasting with love,
O you who turned away, leaving my heart grieving
Distraught—and the utmost for such a heart is to be consumed by love.
And exceedingly sorrowful, though its rightful state is to be serene
ياO مَنyou who تحيرَbecame bewildered حسنُهُhis beauty فيin وجههِhis face
أينَwhere الوِصالُloving union وأينand where أيامُdays الصفاserenity
O you whose beauty is bewildered within your face,
O you whose beauty bewildered in your face
Where is union, and where are the days of serenity?
Where is reunion and where are the days of clarity?
ياO منthe one وفىwas faithful قلبيmy heart لهto him وتضمنتand held within
نفسيmy soul لهfor him مقةَaffection الحبيبِthe beloved وماand did not وفىremain faithful
O you to whom my heart was faithful, while
O you to whom my heart was faithful, though I expected
My soul harbored for you the love one bears a beloved—yet you were not faithful.
My soul to him, the loyalty of a lover, yet he was not faithful
ماwhat كانَwas صبركَyour patience حينَwhen اسمَعكَmade you hear الهوىpassion
شَكوىthe complaint المحبِّthe lover الليلat night أنthat تتعطفاyou show tenderness
What patience had you when passion made you hear
How little was your patience when love recited to you
The lover's complaint by night, that you might show tenderness?
The lover's complaint by night, hoping you'd show sympathy
