أنتَyou تدعوهُsummon it للبكاءِto weep علَيكاfor you
O you of untroubled heart, no eye endures
O the one who stirs my heart as long as an eyelash remains
That you summon to weep for you.
You call it to weep over you
كيفَhow لاnot تألفُgrow accustomed to الدموعُtears جفوناًeyelids
قرحاتٍsore مَنامهاtheir sleep فيin يدَيكاyour two hands
How could tears not grow accustomed to eyelids
How can tears not get accustomed to eyelids
Sore, with their sleep in your hands?
With wounds whose sleep is in your hands
أخذَmay He exact retribution اللَهGod بالبكاءِfor the weeping عيونيmy eyes
ولطولِand for the length السهادِof sleeplessness منfrom عينَيكاyour two eyes
May God exact retribution for my eyes’ weeping,
God has taken my eyes with weeping
And for long sleeplessness, from your eyes,
And with the length of wakefulness from your eyes
ولقلبٍand for a heart يموتُdies ماas long as حييlives الشوlonging (continued in the next line)
قcompletion of “longing” يحياrevives إذاwhen اشتكاهُcomplains of it إِليكاto you
And for a heart that dies as long as longing lives,
And a heart that dies when passion revives
Yet revives when it complains of that longing to you.
Lives when it complains of you
