ياO عَبرةًa tear ليسَnot تَستبينُbecomes visible
يا عَبرةً ليسَ تَستبينُ
غيَّضنهاthey held it back فيwithin الحَشاthe breast الجفونُthe eyelids
غيَّضنها في الحَشا الجفونُ
O tear that does not show,
O lessons that cannot be seen clearly,
The eyelids have held it back within the breast.
Whose tears are hidden by closed eyelids,
يَحياlives بِهاby it قلبُthe heart of مُستهامٍa lovesick lover
يَحيا بِها قلبُ مُستهامٍ
بكاؤُهُhis weeping كامنٌhidden مَصونُguarded
بكاؤُهُ كامنٌ مَصونُ
A lovesick lover's heart lives by it,
Bringing life to a smitten heart
His weeping lies hidden and guarded.
Whose weeping remains guarded,
دمعانِtwo tears لمnot يُدركاwere perceived بوَهمٍby imagination
دمعانِ لم يُدركا بوَهمٍ
ولاand not امتنىimagined بينهماbetween them both ظنونُconjectures
ولا امتنى بينهما ظنونُ
Two tears, beyond imagination's grasp,
Tears that came without delusion
Nor did conjectures imagine anything between them.
And between them no hopes were wished,
تجارياthey both flowed together فيin الضَّميرthe inner self حتىuntil
تجاريا في الضَّمير حتى
كادَتnearly تراعيهماobserve them both العيونُthe eyes
كادَت تراعيهما العيونُ
They flowed together in the inner self until
Flowing in the conscience until
The eyes nearly caught sight of them.
The eyes almost noticed them.
