O my heart, I have indeed endured
O my heart, you have been so patient
the reproach of my reproacher;
Borne blame from those who blame me
وتجرَّعتَand you swallowed غصَّةًa choking pang
وتجرَّعتَ غصَّةً
منfrom حبيبٍa beloved مُصارِمِone who severs ties
من حبيبٍ مُصارِمِ
and you have swallowed a choking pang
And swallowed bitterness
from a beloved who severs ties,
From a beloved who fights me
منone who هوhe الشمسُthe sun فوقَabove غصbough (first part)
من هو الشمسُ فوقَ غص
نٍcompletes 'bough' منof البانِthe bān tree ناعمِsupple
نٍ من البانِ ناعمِ
one who is the sun above a bough
Who is the sun above branches
of the bān tree, supple.
Of soft fingered banana trees
بأَبيmy father as ransom ذاكَthat one ظالِماًunjust
بأَبي ذاكَ ظالِماً
كانَhe be أوor غيرَnot ظالمِunjust
كانَ أو غيرَ ظالمِ
May my father be that one's ransom, whether unjust
By my father whether he was unjust
he be or not unjust.
Or other than unjust
