ياO هجرَهُhis estrangement المُرّbitter منthan الصبرِaloes
يا هجرَهُ المُرّ من الصبرِ
والصبرُand patience لاnot يبقىlasts معwith الجمرِthe embers
والصبرُ لا يبقى مع الجمرِ
O his estrangement, bitterer than aloes!
And patience does not last amid embers.
فكيفَhow, then أسلاهُcan I forget him ووَجديwhile my passion بهِfor him
فكيفَ أسلاهُ ووَجدي بهِ
حلَّhas settled محلَّin the place of القلبِthe heart منwithin صدرِيmy breast
حلَّ محلَّ القلبِ من صدرِي
How, then, can I forget him, when my passion for him
Has taken the heart’s place within my breast?
واللهby God ماnot يغفلُهُforgets him ساعةًfor an hour
والله ما يغفلُهُ ساعةً
وَهميmy imagination ولاnor يدنوhe draws near منto فكريmy thoughts
وَهمي ولا يدنو من فكري
By God, not for an hour is he forgotten
By my imagination, nor does he draw near my thoughts.
لاnot أكذبُI lie to اللهGod ولكننيbut I
لا أكذبُ الله ولكنني
آخِذُam taking منagainst حسادهِthose who envy him حذريmy precautions
آخِذُ من حسادهِ حذري
I do not lie to God, but I
Take precautions against those who envy him.
