ياO قلبُheart ماwhat للهَوىfor love ومالَكand what is it to you
رآكَit saw you تبكيweeping فَماyet did not رَثىtake pity لكon you
O heart, what has love to do with you, and you with love?
O heart, what is this passion and what ails you?
It saw you weeping, yet took no pity on you.
He saw you weeping yet he did not mourn you.
وَياand O قريحَsore الجفونِthe eyelids ضعفاًfrom weakness
أماdo you not ترىsee منthe one whom وهبتَyou gave حالَكyour plight
And you whose eyelids are sore from weakness,
O my teary eyelids in your weakness,
Do you not see the one to whom you gave your plight?
Do you not see to whom you gave your state?
ياO نائمَsleeping الطرفِthe gaze هبgrant لِعينيto my eye
منof لَذَّةِthe delight of النومِsleep ماwhatever بَداseems good لَكto you
O you whose gaze slumbers, grant my eye
O you with slumbering eyes, grant my eyes
As much of sleep's delight as you please.
Some of the bliss of sleep you feel.
كانتmay it be فِداa ransom for مُقلتيكَyour two eyes عينٌan eye
ساهرةٌsleepless لاdoes not ترىsee خيالَكyour phantom
May an eye be ransom for your two eyes,
My eyes would be ransomed for your eyelids
Sleepless, seeing no phantom of you.
That stay awake and cannot see your image.
