O heart, the steadfast cannot bear what you suffer.

For the companion of love—since you are in it—is a bird.

O, how long your separation! How has the breast grown too strait for you,

Its endurance spent, while you remember despite your sorrow?

You hope for deliverance from affliction, after

You have tasted love, and a dark-eyed one with a restrained gaze has captured you—

One for whom hearts cannot resist love,

As long as a gazing eye calls them to it.
