سيِّديmy lord لاdo not تسقِنيgive me to drink
سيِّدي لا تسقِني
أكثرَmore منthan رِطلِa ratl (unit of weight) نَبيذِwine
أكثرَ من رِطلِ نَبيذِ
My lord, do not serve me
My master, give me no more
more than a ratl of wine.
Than a pint of wine.
إنَّindeed شُربيmy drinking للذيof that which
إنَّ شُربي للذي
يؤلِمنيpains me غيرُnot لذيذِpleasant
يؤلِمني غيرُ لذيذِ
Indeed, my drinking of what
For drinking does not please me,
pains me is not pleasant.
Nor leave me feeling fine.
