القلبthe heart منيof me علىupon شوقٍlonging وتعذيبِand torment
وزفرةٍand a sigh فرحتrejoiced فيin قلبِa heart مكروبِanguished
My heart is beset by longing and torment,
My heart is longing and tortured,
And by a sigh that rejoiced within an anguished heart.
With a sigh of joy in an afflicted heart.
ماnot طولُthe duration of شوقيmy longing ولاnor حزنيmy sorrow ولاnor كمديmy anguish
إلاexcept علىupon مهجتيmy soul منfrom بعدafter تعذيبيmy torment
My prolonged longing, my sorrow, and my anguish
Neither my longing, nor my sorrow, nor my suffering is long,
Bear upon my soul alone, after my torment.
Except for my beloved after my torment.
كمhow many كمنconcealed الدهرُTime منof سهمٍan arrow يفوقهُhe nocks it
مسددٍwell-aimed بدمِwith the blood of العشاقِthe lovers مخضوبِstained
How many an arrow has Time concealed, nocking it,
How many times has fate shot arrows,
Well-aimed and stained with lovers' blood.
Aimed with lovers' blood-stained hearts.
