لمdid not تَزدincrease عينيَmy eye إلاexcept عبرةًa tear
وعليهِand over him القلبُthe heart إلاexcept حسرةًsorrow
My eye has gained nothing but tears,
My eyes shed no tears but those of sorrow,
and over him, my heart nothing but sorrow.
And my heart harbors nothing but regret.
كلماwhenever سكنَstilled قلبيmy heart زفرةًa sigh
بالبكاwith weeping هيجَstirred شوقيmy longing زفرةًa sigh
Whenever my heart stilled a sigh
Every time my heart sighs a breath,
with weeping, my longing stirred a sigh.
My yearning stirs it to sigh again.
إنif تكُنbe عَينيmy eye أطاعتنيobeyed me فلمand so did not
يبقَremain فيهاin it منfrom دموعيmy tears قرَّةًcoolness
If my eye has obeyed me, and so no
If my eyes had obeyed me, they would not
soothing coolness from my tears remains within it,
Have left a single teardrop within.
فبماthen because عاصتdisobeyed شفيقاًa compassionate person ناصحاan adviser
فيin هواهاits passion وأطاعتand obeyed نظرةًa glance
it is because it disobeyed a compassionate adviser
But having disobeyed a caring adviser

And obeyed a mere glance instead,
