حرَقُburning الشوقof longing واتقادُand the blazing الغليلِof burning thirst
حرَقُ الشوق واتقادُ الغليلِ
واتِّصالُand the attachment الهَوىof love بقلبٍto a heart عليلِailing
واتِّصالُ الهَوى بقلبٍ عليلِ
Longing's burning and the blaze of thirst,
The yearning burns, the anguish blazes bright,
and love's attachment to an ailing heart,
My heartfelt love takes hold of ailing heart,
وكلاthey both appointed بالجفونِat the eyelids إذwhen نفِدَran out الدَّمthe tears (first part)
وكلا بالجفونِ إذ نفِدَ الدَّم
عُcompletion of 'the tears' دَماًblood واكفاًstreaming قريحَwounded المَسيلِthe channel of flow
عُ دَماً واكفاً قريحَ المَسيلِ
set at the eyelids, when tears ran dry,
And both my eyelids, when the blood runs out,
blood streaming through a wounded channel.
Act staunchly to restrain the outpour's start,
تَركانيthey both left me أنوحُI wail فيin غَسَقِthe darkness of الليthe night (first part)
تَركاني أنوحُ في غَسَقِ اللي
لِcompletion of 'the night' علىover جِسميَmy body السقيمِsickly النحيلِgaunt
لِ على جِسميَ السقيمِ النحيلِ
They left me wailing in the gloom of
And leave me sighing 'neath the shroud of night
night over my sickly, gaunt body.
For my poor, wasted, scanty, frail physique.
تبrepent إلىto اللهِGod واشكُand complain of هذاthis إليهِto Him
تب إلى اللهِ واشكُ هذا إليهِ
ياO قَتيلَone slain by الهَوىlove بغيرِnot in requital for قَتيلِsomeone slain
يا قَتيلَ الهَوى بغيرِ قَتيلِ
Repent to God and complain of this to Him,
I'll turn repentant unto God, and this
O you slain by love, though you have slain no one.
Lament to Him make, love's slain undeceased.
