الوَجدُpassionate longing قدindeed وحَّدنيmade me peerless صبراin patience
وكيفَand how لاnot يقتلُنيhe kills me كِبراout of pride
Longing has made me peerless in patience;
Passion has made me patient, though
And how could he not kill me out of pride?
How can it not destroy me in its enormity?
إنيindeed I لمdid not أطعobey بهِconcerning him عاذلاًa reproacher
وليسَand not أعصيI disobey للهوىof love أمراa command
I have obeyed no reproacher concerning him,
I did not obey a blamer in this,
Nor do I disobey any command of love.
Nor disobey out of passion's order.
فصدَّso he turned away معذوراًexcused علىdespite أننيthe fact that I
أبليتُI exhausted فيin الوجدِpassionate longing بهfor him عذراan excuse
So he turned away, excused, although I
So turn away excused that I
Have exhausted every excuse in my longing for him.
Have wasted in passion, excusing it.
ياO ذاyou الذيwhom ملَّكهُmade him master of حسنهُhis beauty
قلبيmy heart دَعِleave off الإعراضَturning away والهَجراand abandonment
O you whose beauty has made you master of
O you whose beauty has possessed
My heart—cease turning away and forsaking me.
My heart, cease your disdain and estrangement.
