علىupon وجنةٍa cheek فيهاin it الشقائقthe anemones والوردُand the roses
Indeed, by the breeze of the grazers, arrayed
The zephyr blows gently
upon a cheek bearing anemones and roses,
Over a cheek whereon grow the anemones and rose;
علىupon غصنٍa bough غصٍّfull; crowded منof البانthe bān tree لمdid not يطبbe pleasing
لهto it الريحthe wind إلاunless زانهadorned it ذلكthat القدُّfigure
upon a full bough of the bān tree—no wind was pleasing
On a branch of Unnab, whose scent the breeze still sweetens;
to it unless that figure adorned it.
That cheek and branch alike surpassing all beside.
لماwhen أيستdespaired عينيmy eye بشيءٍof anything منof البكاweeping
وماand not كانwas منfrom فقدloss الرقادِsleep لهاfor it بدُّescape
When my eye despaired of any weeping,
Long had mine eyes wept till, despairing of relief,
and it had no escape from losing sleep,
Sleep fled my lids, and slumber sought in vain repose.
فلاso may not قرrest قلبيmy heart ساكناًstill فيin مكانهِits place
ولاand may not كانbe منسوباًascribed إلىto غيرهِanyone but him الوجدُlonging
then may my heart never rest, still in its place,
Restless my heart, and in its place no more at rest;
nor may longing be ascribed to anyone but him.
Swayed by despair, with grief it overflowed.
