إنif كنتَyou are لاnot تسمعُyou hear الأنيناthe groaning
منيfrom me ولاand not تعرفُyou recognize الحنيناthe longing
If you do not hear the moaning
If you do not hear the groaning
from me, nor recognize the yearning,
from me, nor recognize the longing,
فقدthen indeed وحبيكand by my love for you عيلَwas exhausted صبريmy patience
وكمand how long عسىmay الصبرُpatience أنto يكوناbe; last
then—by your beloved—my patience is exhausted;
then indeed, by my love for you, my patience is spent;
and how long can patience possibly endure?
and how long can patience last?
ياO ضيفَguest صبرٍpatience يجرُّdrags قلباًa heart
يكادُalmost لولاكَwere it not for you أنto يبيناdepart
O guest of a patience that pulls a heart onward,
O guest of patience, drawing a heart along
a heart that, but for you, would nearly break away—
that, but for you, would almost depart.
ماnot ذاقَtasted حسنَthe sweetness العزاءِconsolation شوقاًout of longing
فكيفَso how منone who فارقَparted from القريناthe companion
it has tasted no consolation, overcome by longing;
In its longing, it has not tasted the sweetness of consolation;
then what of one parted from his companion?
so what of one who has parted from his companion?
