إنif يكنis الحشاthe heart هوىًlove; passion لاnot تَنامُyou sleep
وضنىًand wasting sickness لاnot تمنُّهُwear it down الأيَّامُthe days
If the heart holds love, you do not sleep,
If passion is desire, it does not sleep,
and a wasting sickness the days do not wear away.
And yearning that the days do not wish it away.
بأبيwith my father as ransom أنتَyou كيفَhow تُبليyou wear out شَبابيmy youth
بالتصابيwith youthful dalliance وليسَand not يَبلَىwears out السَّقامُthe sickness
My father be your ransom! How you wear out my youth
By my father, how do you waste my youth
with dalliance, while the sickness does not fade.
With frowns, though frailty is not shamed?
هَبgrant لعينيto my eyes مماsome of what تُلمُّyou gather بعينيin the two eyes
كَyour (suffix) هَنيئاًsweet; pleasant لِمُقلتيكَfor your two eyes المنَامُsleep
Grant my eyes some of what you gather in yours—
Grant my eyes from what hurts my eyes
may sleep be sweet to your two eyes.
Some solace, as dreams solace the sleeper.
فَوَحبيكَso, by my love for you ماnot أطعتI heeded مَلاماreproach
حينَwhen يَرقىrises علىover القلوبِthe hearts المَلامُreproach
So, by my love for you, I have heeded no reproach,
By your love I disobey no chider
when reproach rises over hearts.
When blame mounts on the hearts of the blamed.
