أذكرُ وجداً فيدَّعي صوناً

I speak of longing, so he professes chastity.

لا وأخذ الله من أساء بمَِن

كانَ ضنى جسمهِ له عذرا

Whose bodily wasting was an excuse for him.

ولا ابتلى اللَهُ بالهوى حسناً

ابتدى التجني وآثرَ الغدرا

Nor may God afflict with love a fair one

Who began unjust reproaches and preferred betrayal,

وكيدَ حتى كأنهُ حنقٌ

وكيدَ حتى كأنهُ حنقٌ

أو طالبٌ في جفائِه وترا

أو طالبٌ في جفائِه وترا

And schemed until he seemed enraged,

Or a seeker of vengeance in his coldness.
