أرسلت دمعي عائداً لفؤادي
فيin وحشةٍloneliness منfrom قلةscarcity العوادِthe visitors to the sick
في وحشةٍ من قلة العوادِ
I sent my tears to visit my heart,
I sent my tears back to my heart
in loneliness from the scarcity of visitors.
In the loneliness of few visitors

My heart passed on its sickness when they came to me, as though
The most hostile of deserts brought his gifts to me, as though
the two and what ailed them had met by appointment.
We had an appointment set between us
أبكيI weep لجسمfor a body ماnot ينامsleeps سقامةًfrom sickness
أبكي لجسم ما ينام سقامةً
ولمقلةٍand for an eye عبرىtearful بغيرwithout رقادِslumber
ولمقلةٍ عبرى بغير رقادِ
I weep for a body kept sleepless by sickness,
I cry for a body that cannot sleep, sick
and for a tearful eye without slumber.
And for eyes that weep ceaselessly

So perhaps my tears may serve as a means
Perhaps my tears can be a means
to bring closeness nearer, or put separation farther away.
To bring us close, whether near or far apart
