I obeyed passion and so kept company with wasting sickness,
I obeyed desire, so I kept company with sadness
just as my eyes kept company with sleep.
As I kept company with my two tearful eyes
وكمand how many قائلٍa person saying لوif only دَعوتَyou called upon السلوforgetfulness
وكيفَand how يُجيبُanswers السلوُّforgetfulness الجَزوعاthe distraught one
And many a person has said, “If only you called upon forgetfulness!”
And how many say: If only you would leave desire!
And how can forgetfulness answer one distraught?
But how can desire respond to the heartbroken?
ولوand if كنتُI were أقدرُI am able ألاnot to أذوبI melt away

And if I were able not to melt away,
If I were able not to melt,
I would be able to ward off passion.
I would be able to resist desire

I think death will grant neither
I think death will not take
a lover his wishes nor a coward what he dreads.
