أصبحتُI have come to أوثرُI favor أهلَthe people of اللومِblame والعذلِand reproach
فيin حبِّlove for ذيone possessing غنجٍcoquettish charm بالحسنِto beauty متصِلِjoined
I have come to favor those who blame and reproach,
I have come to prefer blamers and reproachers
In my love for a coquettish one inseparable from beauty.
In love of one graced with beauty everlasting
لوif شاءَhe wished يطلعُhe brings forth شمساًa sun منfrom مَحاسنهِhis charms
تلوحُit shines فيin غصُنٍa bough منfrom حسنهِhis beauty خضِلِlush
If he wished to bring forth a sun from his charms,
If he wished, the sun would rise from his beauty
Shining on a bough lush with his beauty,
Shining from a bough of his grace evergreen
لاsurely (reading «لا شرقت» as «لأشرقت») شرقتwould shine منهfrom him شمسٌa sun لاnot يدنسُهاsullies it
ليلٌnight فشمسُso the sun of الضحىthe forenoon منهof him علىin a state of وجلِfear
A sun would shine from him, unsullied by
No sun has risen from him that night would sully
Night; the forenoon sun stands in fear of him.
The sun of morning from him is bright serene
ماnot لامنيblamed me أحدٌanyone فيهِfor him فأبصرهُand then saw him
إلاexcept وعيناهُand his two eyes عنaway from عينيَّmy two eyes فيin شغُلِpreoccupation
No one has blamed me for him and then beheld him
No one blames me for him but when they see him
Without his eyes becoming too absorbed to meet mine.
Their eyes from mine are turned, fixed, and unseen
