وأسررتُ حتى أثرَ السرُّ في صدري

وأسررتُ حتى أثرَ السرُّ في صدري

I concealed you until love for you outgrew my concealment,

You left, though your love remained concealed within me,

And kept it secret until the secret left its mark within my breast,

And I kept it secret, till the secret overwhelmed my heart.

وحتى وجدتُ الصبرَ مُراً ولم أجِد

وحتى وجدتُ الصبرَ مُراً ولم أجِد

لقلبي سبيلاً في هواكَ إلى الصبر

لقلبي سبيلاً في هواكَ إلى الصبر

And until I found patience bitter and found no

And though I found patience bitter, I could not

Path to patience for my heart in its love for you,

Find a way with you, into patience my heart could steer.

وحتى رأيتُ العينَ تمطُر وجنتي

وحتى رأيتُ العينَ تمطُر وجنتي

دماً ودموعاً بين أجفانِها تجري

دماً ودموعاً بين أجفانِها تجري

And until I saw the eye rain upon my cheek

And though I saw my eyes rain tears,

Blood and tears flowing between its eyelids.

And blood, down my cheeks in currents flow.

ولما رأيتُ السرَّ يختلِبُ الصبا

ولما رأيتُ السرَّ يختلِبُ الصبا

ويَشرعُ في الصبرِ استرحتُ إلى الهجرِ

ويَشرعُ في الصبرِ استرحتُ إلى الهجرِ

And when I saw the secret beguile youthful passion

And when I saw the secret begin to slip from me

And encroach upon patience, I found relief in separation.

I found solace, and the will, in separation to persevere.
