ودَّعتُI bade farewell منthe one whom لاdo not أسميI name ليلةَon the night of الأحدِSunday
فكدتُso I nearly منfrom ذاكthat أنto أقضيdie ومنand from كَمدِيmy anguish
I bade farewell to one I do not name on Sunday night.
I bid farewell on Sunday night to one I shall not name
So I nearly died from that, and from my anguish.
I nearly perished then, consumed with love and shame
ياO فرقةًparting فرقتsundered بالحزنِthrough sorrow وقعتهاits blow
منfrom شدةِthe intensity of الوجدِlonging بينَbetween الروحِthe soul والجسدِand the body
O parting, whose blow, through sorrow, sundered
Oh parting, you have rent my heart with sorrow’s blow
Soul from body through the intensity of longing.
With longing’s fire, you’ve torn my soul and body so
لاnot أحسبُI think القلبَthe heart إنif ولىdeparted الحبيبُthe beloved بهِwith it
يدعىis summoned بعودٍto return لأنbecause النفسthe soul لمhas not تعدِreturned
I do not think the heart, if the beloved departs with it,
Think not the heart, though lost its love, shall welcome any other
Will be summoned back, for the soul has not returned.
The soul, bereft, cannot begin with any other
ياO دولةَreign الشوقِof longing فيin قلبيmy heart ظفرتِyou have triumphed بهِover it
أشكوI complain إلىto اللَهGod لاnot أشكوI complain إلىto أحدِanyone
O reign of longing in my heart, you have triumphed over it.
O yearning that within my heart has gained such victory
I complain to God; I complain to no one else.
To God I pour my plaint, and not to anyone shall I
