كيفَhow استدلَّhe inferred علىconcerning أنِّيthat I بُليتُI was afflicted بهِwith him
رأىhe saw دُموعيmy tears وَماand what بالجِسمِin the body منof سَقمِsickness
How did he discern that I was stricken with love for him?
How did he deduce that I'm sick with love for him?
He saw my tears and the sickness in my body.
He saw my tears though my body shows no illness.
أماindeed وَحبيهِby my love for him لوif وَجديmy yearning يكونُwere بهِin him
كَماas ينامُhe sleeps وطَرفيand my eye منهbecause of him لمdid not ينَمِsleep
Indeed, by my love for him, if my yearning were his,
If he knew how much I love him, he would be
As he sleeps, while my eye has not slept because of him,
Asleep, while my eyes know no rest from him.
إذاًthen لرقَّhe would soften فكانَand so would be الوصلُunion متصلاًunbroken
لاnot ينقلُturns القلبَthe heart منfrom شوقٍlonging إلىto ألمِpain
Then he would soften, and union would be unbroken,
If so, he would have mercy and unite us,
Not turning the heart from longing to pain.
Not make my heart shift from longing to pain.
ياO حسنَهُhis beauty لمdid not تدَعyou leave صَبراًpatience أعيشُI live بهby it
ومقلةًand an eye حملتit carried حتفيmy death إلىto قدميmy feet
O his beauty, you have left no patience for me to live by,
Oh, his beauty! He left me no patience to live,
And an eye that carried my death to my feet!
And an eyelash that brought my end to my feet.
