حَلَّsettled محلthe place of الفؤادِthe heart منwithin بدَنيmy body
ياOh لكَfor you منof ساكنينِtwo dwellers فيin وطَنِa homeland
He has settled in the heart's place within my body;
My heart has taken the place of my body
Oh, what a pair of dwellers in one homeland!
Oh you who dwell in my homeland
ياO سائِليyou who ask me أينَwhere عبرةٌa tear نفِدتwas exhausted
بكَتwept جَفوتيmy estrangement بهاwith it علىover وسَنيmy drowsiness
O you who ask me where the spent tear is,
Oh you who ask where my tears have gone
With which my estrangement wept over my drowsiness:
My indifference wept for them in my intimacy
أوحشَنيforsook me الدَّمعُtears والرقادُand slumber معاًtogether
لطولِbecause of the length of إنسيmy intimacy بالسقمِwith sickness والحَزنِand sorrow
Tears and slumber have both forsaken me,
Together solitude and sleep have saddened me
Through my long intimacy with sickness and sorrow.
For long has been my forgetfulness of wellness and cheer
ليتَwould that الذيthat which حلَّbefell بيme يزيدُincreases فماfor not
قلتُI said لهto it ليتَwould that ذاكَthat لمnot يكُنِhad been
Would that what has befallen me would increase, for never
I wish this which has befallen me would grow
Have I said of it, 'Would that it had not been.'
Never did I say, I wish that had not happened
