لا منامٌ له ولا إسفارُ
ليلهُhis night سرمدٌendless وليسَand there is no نهارُday
ليلهُ سرمدٌ وليسَ نهارُ
He has neither sleep nor daybreak.
No sleep, and no waking,
His night is endless, and there is no day.
His night is eternal with no dawning,
صدَّturned away عنهُfrom him الصباحُthe dawn مذsince صدَّturned away عنهُfrom him
صدَّ عنهُ الصباحُ مذ صدَّ عنهُ
لاnot يزورُvisits الصباحُthe dawn مَنone who لاnot يُزارُis visited
لا يزورُ الصباحُ مَن لا يُزارُ
Dawn has shunned him ever since he was shunned.
Since dawn has turned away from visiting him,
Dawn does not visit one who is not visited.
Dawn does not visit those who are not visited,
سنةٌa year فيin الوصالِunion ليلةُa night هجرٍseparation
سنةٌ في الوصالِ ليلةُ هجرٍ
ليتَنيif only I متُّI had died واللياليwhile the nights قصارُshort
ليتَني متُّ والليالي قصارُ
One night of separation is a year of union.
A year of union is a night of separation,
If only I had died while the nights were short.
Would that I had died while nights were still short,
صرَّحَrevealed الدمعُthe tears بالذيabout what كتمَconcealed القلthe heart (first part)
صرَّحَ الدمعُ بالذي كتمَ القل
بُcompletion of 'the heart' ويبقىand remain معwith البكاthe weeping أسرارُsecrets
بُ ويبقى مع البكا أسرارُ
Tears revealed what the heart concealed,
My tears revealed what my heart had concealed,
yet secrets remain amid the weeping.
And secrets remain with my weeping.
