ربِّmy Lord ماwhat لِلهوىwith love وماand what للصدودِwith rejection
ربِّ ما لِلهوى وما للصدودِ
Separation’s freshness has worn my new garment threadbare.
The newness of separation has worn out my freshness.
Lord, what is it with passion—and what with cold refusal?
My Lord, what is it with love, and what with rejection?

O sorrowing one who wept at the loss of a dear friend,
O sorrowful one, who wept for the loss of one carefree,
and O one close in affection who wept for one far away—
And you, near in love, who wept for one far away.

Any increase in love for him through remembering him.
