ياO حَياتيmy life عندَat انقِطاعِthe ending of رَجائيmy hope
يا حَياتي عندَ انقِطاعِ رَجائي
منof حَياتيmy life لاmay not خابَbe disappointed فيكَin you رَجائيmy hope
من حَياتي لا خابَ فيكَ رَجائي
O my life, when I lose hope
of living—may my hope in you never fail!
ياO شِفائيmy cure إِذاwhen تَطاولَis prolonged سُقميmy sickness
يا شِفائي إِذا تَطاولَ سُقمي
ودَوائيand my medicine إذاwhen تَفاقَمَworsens دائيmy illness
ودَوائي إذا تَفاقَمَ دائي
O my cure when my sickness lingers,
and my medicine when my illness worsens!
ياO شَقيقَtwin of الفؤادِthe heart فيin البَدَنِthe body الناthe emaciated (first fragment)
يا شَقيقَ الفؤادِ في البَدَنِ النا
حلِemaciated (continuation) بَينamid الغليلِthe burning thirst فيin الأحشاءِthe entrails
حلِ بَين الغليلِ في الأحشاءِ
O twin of my heart in my emaciated body,
amid the burning thirst within my entrails!
كيفَhow ليfor me أنthat تكونَyou be حظِّيmy portion منof الدthe (fragment before 'world')
كيفَ لي أن تكونَ حظِّي من الد
دنياworld وفيand in غيرِهاother than it يكونُbe جَزائيmy reward
دنيا وفي غيرِها يكونُ جَزائي
How can I have you as my portion of this
world, and have my reward in the next?
