كانَthere was ليfor me دَمعٌtears فلماthen when ظَلَماhe acted unjustly
وبكتهُand wept for him مقلتيmy eye صارَbecame دَماblood
I had tears; then, when he acted cruelly,
and my eye wept for him, they turned to blood.
وَالذيand the one whom أهوَىI love يَمينيmy oath وكفَىand sufficient is
بالذيin the one whom أهواهُI love him عنديَfor me سقماan affliction
The one I love is my oath—and enough
of an affliction to me is the one I love.
والهَوىand love والوجدُand passion والشوقُand longing معاًtogether
سألاthey both questioned قلبيmy heart ولكنbut ليماthey both were blamed
And love, passion, and longing together
questioned my heart, but were blamed.
برِحَhas departed الكِتمانُconcealment لاno ذنبَblame بِمَنon one who
كتمَconcealed الشوقَlonging وأبدىand revealed السقَماillness
Concealment is gone; no blame rests on one
who concealed his longing and revealed his illness.
