يا طولَ حسرةِ قلبٍ لا أعللهُ
إلاexcept بطولِwith prolonged عتابٍreproach ليسdoes not يقبلُهُaccepts it
إلا بطولِ عتابٍ ليس يقبلُهُ
O how long my grief over a heart I know only
Oh, the long anguish of a heart I soothe
through ceaseless reproach—reproach it will not accept!
Only with lengthy reproaches it will not accept.
عصىdefied السلوَّforgetting love فأضحىand so became لاnot يليقُis fitting بهِfor it
عصى السلوَّ فأضحى لا يليقُ بهِ
إلاexcept خلافَopposition to هوىًthe desire منwhoever كانَwas يعذلُهُreproaching it
إلا خلافَ هوىً من كانَ يعذلُهُ
It resisted consolation, until nothing suited it
It refused to forget, and now nothing suits it
but to defy the desire of whoever rebuked it.
But opposing the wishes of whoever reproached it.
يرىone sees لهfor it نفساa breath فيin إثرهِits wake نفسٌa breath
يرى له نفسا في إثرهِ نفسٌ
منfrom زفرةٍa sigh حرُّهاits heat لاno شكَّdoubt تقتلُهُkills it
من زفرةٍ حرُّها لا شكَّ تقتلُهُ
Each breath of his sees another following in its wake,
One sees a breath from it, another following in its wake,
born of a sigh whose heat will surely kill him.
From a sigh whose heat will surely kill it.
ماwhat ليfor me أعاتبُI reproach قلباًa heart فيfor صبابتهِits ardent longing
ما لي أعاتبُ قلباً في صبابتهِ
والعينُwhile the eye باللحظِwith glances للأهواءِto passions تبذلُهُgives it over
والعينُ باللحظِ للأهواءِ تبذلُهُ
Why should I reproach a heart for its passionate longing,
Why do I reproach a heart for its ardent longing,
when the eye, with its glances, gives it over to desire?
While the eye, with its glances, gives it over to passions?
