we inhale because of overpowering grief—

We inhale out of overwhelming grief,

أسرعُ في جسمٍ فتيً مدنفٍ

أسرعُ في جسمٍ فتيً مدنفٍ

ما أخطأته الأسهمُ الصائبه

ما أخطأته الأسهمُ الصائبه

all race through a lovesick youth’s body faster

Are swifter in a young, ailing body;

than sure-striking arrows that never miss him.

The arrows that strike true have not missed it.

يطمع من بعدِكَ في سلوتي

يطمع من بعدِكَ في سلوتي

لا صدقت آماله الكاذبَه

لا صدقت آماله الكاذبَه

Whoever, after you, hopes that I may find consolation—

He hopes, after you, that I will find solace;

may his lying hopes never come true.

May his false hopes never come true.
