أترى ما رَجا الفؤادُ بكون

من تلاقٍ يحيا بهِ المحزونُ

من تلاقٍ يحيا بهِ المحزونُ

Do you see what the heart hoped for in the coming

Does my heart wish for a meeting

of a meeting that brings the sorrowful one to life?

To bring joy to the sorrowful one?

غَدَرَ الدهرُ بي وللدهر لا كا

غَدَرَ الدهرُ بي وللدهر لا كا

نَ خُطوبٌ كثيرةٌ وفنونُ

نَ خُطوبٌ كثيرةٌ وفنونُ

Time betrayed me; and Time—may it never exist—

Time has betrayed me, yet Time is not to blame

has many calamities of varied kinds.

Many are its tribulations and arts.

فنأى عنهُ حِبُّهُ فنأى الصب

فنأى عنهُ حِبُّهُ فنأى الصب

رُ وحلت عن الجُمودِ الجفونُ

رُ وحلت عن الجُمودِ الجفونُ

So his beloved drew away from him, and patience departed;

So its love forsook me and patience left me

and the eyelids were freed from their dryness.

And frozen eyelids began to move.

ليتَني قد رأيتُ إلفي سريعاً

ليتَني قد رأيتُ إلفي سريعاً

وطَوتني من بعدِ ذاكَ المَنونُ

وطَوتني من بعدِ ذاكَ المَنونُ

If only I had seen my beloved without delay,

Would that I might see my beloved soon

and Death had folded me away after that.

And after that be enveloped in death's shroud.
