رقدَتslept عيناهُhis two eyes عنheedless of سَهريmy sleeplessness
نائِماًasleep عنيoblivious to me وعنand to فِكريmy thoughts
His eyes slept, heedless of my sleeplessness,
as he slept, oblivious to me and my thoughts.
لاnot يباليhe cares كيفَhow كنتُI was ولاnor
ماwhat جنىreaped منfrom لحظةٍa glance بصرِيmy sight
He cares not how I fared, nor
what my sight has reaped from a glance.
بأبيmy father be his ransom كمhow often كمhow often حذرتُI was wary ولمand did not
أدرِknow أنَّthat الحتفَdeath فيin حذريmy caution
My father be his ransom! How often, how often I was wary, yet did not
know that death lay in my caution.
وأبيby my father لمdid not يبقِleave ليfor me نظراًany sight
كانَwas ليmine حيناًfor a time ولمand did not يَذرspare
By my father, he left me none of the sight
I once had; he spared nothing.
