وَشاعرAnd a poet ذِيwith منطقٍspeech رائقِgraceful
وَشاعر ذِي منطقٍ رائقِ
فيin جُبَّةٍa robe كالعارضِlike the cloud البارقِflashing with lightning
في جُبَّةٍ كالعارضِ البارقِ
And a poet with graceful speech,
In a robe like a lightning-flashing cloud,
قَطعاءَmaimed شلاءَcrippled رقاعيةٍpatchwork
قَطعاءَ شلاءَ رقاعيةٍ
دُهريةٍage-old مرقوعةِpatched العاتقِthe shoulder
دُهريةٍ مرقوعةِ العاتقِ
Maimed, crippled, a thing of patches,
Age-old, patched at the shoulder—
قدَّمَهاgave it precedence العُريnakedness علىover نفسهِitself
قدَّمَها العُري على نفسهِ
لفَضلِهاfor its greater worth فيin القدرِthe decree السابقِprior
لفَضلِها في القدرِ السابقِ
Nakedness gave it precedence over itself,
For its greater worth in the decree of old.
