He whom sleeplessness had not yet betrayed slept,
Unshielded from the afflictions of thought,
خاليَfree القلبِthe heart منfrom الشوقِlonging الذيthat
غرَّقَdrowned الخدينِboth cheeks فيin ماءِthe water of البصرthe eyes
His heart free of the longing that
Drowned both cheeks in tears.

فيin هوَىlove for منone منهُbefore him يستحييfeels shy القَمرthe moon
The reproacher claimed I was excessive
In loving one before whom the moon grows shy.

Had he seen some of what I beheld,
He would have remained a slave to gazing all his life.
